Castrol has launched Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid, specifically for independent workshops certified to work on electric vehicle (EV) powertrains.
Available in 5l packs, the two new products – in D1 and D2 variants – suit a wide range of EVs, helping to extend the life of the drivetrain system and enable EVs to go further on a single charge in comparison, according to Castrol, to mass market EV factory fill fluid.
The company said this new product is a high performance and efficiency, fully-synthetic fluid for transmissions paired with dry e-motors, which offer high levels of gear and bearing protection.
Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid is part of a broader family of Castrol ON EV fluids. The range includes EV transmission fluids, thermal fluids and greases that help with the mainstream adoption of EVs. The company said:
- EV transmission fluids deliver enhanced protection of the drivetrain and improve efficiency, as proven in bespoke testing and development
- Castrol EV thermal fluids help keep batteries cooler, even in extreme conditions, and this enables ultra-fast charging (greater than 150kW)
- EV greases play a key role in maintaining optimum efficiency and extending the life of vehicle components
Two out of three of the world’s major car manufacturers now choose Castrol ON for their factory fill.
Castrol Senior Technologist PD Driveline and EV Fluids, Patrick Bauer, said: “As greater volumes of EVs enter the aftermarket, more original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have asked us to make an advanced EV transmission fluid available to their workshop partners, to support ongoing repair and maintenance activity.
“While these fluids in some EVs are deemed ‘fill for life’, workshops need replacement product in the event of a repair, and there can also be a requirement to change the product early to safeguard protection in certain use cases.
“We have collaborated very closely with OEMs and tier one suppliers to develop, test and deploy products to meet the required performance criteria.”
In addition to supporting businesses bringing production EVs to market, Castrol has worked with the Jaguar TCS Racing Formula E team. This means that EV fluid technologies can be pushed and tested on the track before they reach the road.
Castrol aims to be a net zero brand by 2050 or sooner.
