LKQ Euro Car Parts has called on garages to make the most of peak MOT season demand this September, with independent operators apparently expected to carry out four million tests next month.
The aftermarket specialist expects motorists to demand greater value from garages this MOT season, following months of inflation and cost-of-living pressures. It claims around two in five (43%) UK customers are shopping around to find cheaper garages amid income squeezes*.
It’s advising the use of OE alternatives, such as its in-house Starline and Crosland brands, with one in five customers said to be using cheaper parts where possible. OE alternatives can reportedly help garages to win over price-sensitive customers while providing parts and goods that deliver the same performance as branded options.
Another consideration is Payment Assist, which is said to offer drivers an interest free loan to help spread the cost of unexpected vehicle repair bills – reducing the chances of them delaying work or taking their business elsewhere.
And to help technicians maximise billable time and get through high workloads, there is a new service kit builder on the LKQ Euro Car Parts online ordering platform, Omnipart, which is designed to bring up all the products a vehicle might need when technicians enter its registration.
Colin Cottrell, Marketing Director at LKQ Euro Car Parts, said:“Data suggests the MOT peak we’ve seen in September since the pandemic is beginning to correct itself. But a significant four million tests are still forecast in the month ahead – so it’s a good idea for workshops to proactively reach out to customers and get them booked in without delay.
“It’s also important to remember that customers will have faced months of their income being squeezed by inflationary pressures. Creating value through supplying OE alternatives and flexible payment terms can help to reassure cost-conscious customers, who may be more inclined to shop around this season. Explaining their options and letting them choose the one they’re most comfortable with is a great way to drive trust.
“Looking ahead, the latest SMMT data finds the UK’s second-hand car market is in growth. Income squeezes are also forcing many to stay with their current vehicle, contributing to an ageing car parc, spelling good news for the independent sector.”
