GSF fundraiser more than doubles its target

Charity football matches raises over £4,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support

GSF Allstars teamed up with Atletico BCC, a team from Birmingham City Council, in a charity football match held recently at Castle Vale Stadium.

The event was coordinated by long standing employee Russell King, a Dispatch Driver Supervisor at GSF’s Birmingham head office, to raise money for treatment of his wife Kay King who has a Grade two Glioma Astrocytoma brain tumour.

Kay was diagnosed three years ago, but has since discovered this year that the tumour has grown and would need to start immediate chemotherapy. So as a joint effort, this community event was organised to help raise money for additional private health care for Kay and for MacMillan Cancer Support.

As dusk fell, the stadium was filled by more than 100 supporters, with free entry to watch and a request for voluntary donations on the door. A jubilant crowd cheered on the teams in support for the cause and a highly entertaining game saw GSF dominate throughout, running out eventual 5-2 winners.

But most significantly, within hours the total raised had more than doubled the initial target of £2,000.

“With a couple of raffle prizes still to be sold which will increase the total, the amount raised already stands at nearly £4,100,” said Steve King, Russell’s brother who helped organise the event. “Thank you ever so much to everyone who got involved and helped us raise this huge amount!”
