Ring emphasises importance of battery health

As a result of hotter temperatures during the summer months, more drivers may expect to suffer vehicle battery failure in winter, according to Ring Automotive.

Drivers and technicians should preempt winter battery failure following hot summers by utilising new battery analysis technology to stay on top of vehicle maintenance, as warm weather can affect vehicle battery chemistry and cause untimely failure, the supplier reported.

Flat batteries are mainly caused by wear and tear, and the ageing process – but prolonged heat in summer is often the reason for the spike in battery failures experienced by drivers in winter, rather than the colder climate as is commonly assumed.

Ring Marketing Director, Henry Bisson, said: “The chemistry within a vehicle battery is far more active in hotter weather, which speeds up the ageing process. Chemical reactions within the battery can double for every extra 10 degrees of heat, so when winter comes around and more power is required to start the vehicle, there’s nothing left in the battery to deliver as the cells have dried out – leading to untimely failure.”

Combatting the searing sun

Considering the challenges inflicted on batteries, thanks to summer temperatures, Ring has developed a range of battery chargers and analysers that help technicians stay on top of battery maintenance and diagnose faults. The battery care product line features a wide range of tools providing both factors and garages with several upselling opportunities.

Ring’s SmartCharge RSCP5024 (top-right) and RSCP60T products are designed with the professional in mind, delivering 50 and 60A continuous charging respectively, to deal with the demand of 12V and 24V battery recharging during diagnostic or data upload work.

The new range of professional charging equipment features smart charge technology, which optimises battery performance and improves the ability to hold charge. RSCP5024 has two dedicated charging curves, seven stage for lithium batteries and eight stage for all other chemistries, optimising the battery’s performance and improving the ability to hold charge.

Also available in the graphical battery analyser range is Ring’s RBAG750, which can provide a complete health check of the battery and electrical systems of a 12V and 24V vehicle. RBAG750 will detect battery charging problems by checking that alternator voltages fall within normal operating ranges, and checks for potential starting problems by measuring battery voltage drop during engine cranking.

Ring has also developed the RSC804 (top-left), RSC806 and RSC808 smart battery chargers and maintainers, to keep drivers safer on the roads and be able to easily restore power to their motorcycles, cars, 4x4s, vans or trucks.
