Ecobat presents opportunities in pre-2022 Tesla models

Ecobat Battery is confident that focusing on the pre-2022 Tesla range – which, like most EVs, incorporate a 12V battery to power essential low-voltage systems – will yield positive results. Here’s its product, e-commerce and marketing strategy manager, Andy Waite, to explain why.

The reasoning is straightforward: Using a 12V battery allows manufacturers to power critical vehicle systems with a safer, low-voltage current, ensuring continued operation even if the highvoltage (HV) battery becomes discharged. Additionally, it provides a more cost-effective solution by enabling the use of standardised components already found in combustion-powered vehicles, as well as hybrid and EV models from various VMs.

Despite advances in EV technology, batteries still have a finite lifespan and will eventually degrade and fail. The service life of a 12V battery in an EV is not fixed but depends on usage. Even in ideal conditions, all batteries will deteriorate over time – and Tesla’s are no exception.

Market data suggests that a typical 12V EV battery lasts between three and four years; however, its lifespan can be significantly impacted by the vehicle’s electrical demands and driving patterns. Frequent short trips, which draw heavily on multiple systems and accessories, can leave the battery in a discharged state, increasing the risk of premature failure.

External factors, such as extreme weather – whether excessively hot or cold – can also accelerate battery degradation. Charge-related issues or a tendency to maximise driving range between recharges may further contribute to reduced battery life.

For the independent service and repair sector, this presents an opportunity to benefit from the growing EV market, particularly for those partnering with Ecobat Battery for pre-2022 Tesla applications.

Understanding the specific battery types used in these vehicles is essential. The Model 3 and Model X both rely on traditional lead-acid batteries – B24 and B19 types, respectively – while the Model S is equipped with a U1-type AGM battery. Regardless of the model, Ecobat Battery includes the OE fitment in its range.
